Sky Watchers: Following the Stars Across the Sky Making Connections to Constellations and Indigenous Storytelling

In this hands-on STEM lesson, students explore the science of constellations through a cultural lens by creating their own star patterns using black construction paper, gold star stickers, and yarn. Students name their constellations in both Navajo and English and write a short story or description explaining the meaning or origin of their design. The lesson incorporates art, storytelling, Navajo language, and astronomy, promoting both scientific understanding and cultural pride. This activity was also used successfully during a STEM-focused Parent Night, encouraging family engagement and home-school connections.
