Discovering and Calculating Density
Students will discover the relationship between mass and volume in relation to density through an inquiry lab. Students will take mass and volume data of several different solid substances and compare it to the mass and volume of water. Using this data students will discover what properties of matter will cause a substance to float or sink in water and compare their numerical data results to observations made in the lab. Lastly, students will graph their data and learn to read a density, mass vs. volume graph and answer questions about it.
