Using Mathematical Models in Engineering and Science –Using Gears to Learn About Ratios and Proportions
In this lesson, students will explore the concepts of gear ratios and proportions. They will construct a working gear system and observe how the ratio between gears affects their motion. They will use proportional relationships to find the ratios between different gears in a system.

Students will brainstorm, and make predictions of why an airplane can fly. The teacher will present the knowledge of aerodynamics to the students using video , and giving them opportunity to process
Students will create an inclined plane using Pythagorean Theorem and will experiment with rolling objects and try to find a solution to reduce the speed through friction, or air resistance or weight.
In this engaging lesson, students use their knowledge from the 2 previous lessons to design, draw blueprints, and build a load bearing bridge. Link to view all lessons is included!
