Solar-Powered Water Purification System
The "Solar-Powered Water Purification System" lesson is an engaging and hands-on STEM experience for 4th-grade students. In this lesson, students explore the importance of clean water and learn how solar energy can be harnessed for water purification. The lesson begins with an introduction to clean water and renewable energy sources, specifically focusing on solar energy. Students then dive into designing and building their own solar-powered water purification system using provided materials such as plastic containers, tubing, activated charcoal, sand, gravel, and coffee filters. They work collaboratively in small groups, fostering teamwork and problem-solving skills. Once their systems are constructed, students test the effectiveness of their systems by pouring dirty water through them and measuring the temperature change before and after purification. Finally, each group presents their system and engages in a reflective discussion on the importance of clean water and the role of solar energy in addressing environmental challenges. Through this lesson, students not only gain knowledge about clean water and renewable energy but also develop critical thinking, collaboration, and data collection skills.
