Reflections of Rangoli
by Kirstin Udall
In this lesson, students will explore the concept of reflection in mathematics through the creation and design or original Rangoli patterns. Students will gain an understanding of reflectional symmetry and its application in transformations. Students will practice reflecting points, and based geometric shapes on a coordinate plane and then apply this lesson in designing a Rangoli pattern. Salt and sidewalk chalk are combined in a hands on activity that allows students to replicate this design on a larger scale resulting in a beautiful piece of sidewalk art.
