Marshmallow Spaghetti Tower
by Marily Jucal
This can be done in the classroom and is designed for group collaboration. The main objectives of this lesson are to create a design for a tower that is made from dried spaghetti sticks and marshmallows and test design iteratively to meet the criteria, which is to create a tall and strong tower. The lesson incorporates a review of conversion of units. Each group will have to follow the time frame allotted for each part of the lesson (1) to create the design, (2) test the design and (3) finalize the structure of the tower based on your tested/improved design. This can be fun and interesting for the students since it can be a sort of a contest among the groups. The lesson time frame is 80 minutes, but it can be extended according to your preference particularly if the students are willing and requesting to do more.
