Engineering Clean Water

Students work together to design a water filtration system to separate pollutants from water. This lesson takes about 120 minutes to complete.
Materials include:
Polluted Water:
Pour 1 cup of water into clear cups-1 per group
Measure and put ½ tablespoon of gravel and ½ tablespoon of soil into each cup.
Then, gather small pieces of trash (i.e. gum or candy wrappers, pieces of straw paper, etc.).
Add a few small pieces of trash to each of the cups.

Materials for Students to Choose From:
Glue
Tape
Scissors
Cups
Coffee filters
Empty water bottles (2 available per group)
Fabric
Foil
Wooden skewers
String
Feathers
Plastic wrap
Paper plates
Tupperware
Sand
Rocks/gravel
