Combating Fugitive Dust to Power Up!
by Tianna Griffin
This project transforms students into solar power investigators! They'll construct miniature solar power plants (model houses) and test methods to combat dust, a real-world challenge for solar panels. Using multimeters, they'll measure how dust affects electricity output. Students will design dust collection tools using double-sided tape on card stock, following a teacher-provided visual to categorize dust accumulation as light, medium, or heavy. To explore dust mitigation, they'll choose between two materials, xanthum gum powder or hydrogel, as a substitute for a real-world technique. Through discussions, presentations, and info graphics, students will share their findings, explaining how their chosen substitute affects dust buildup and solar panel efficiency. This project ignites critical thinking, tackles real-world problems, and empowers students to discover innovative solutions for a cleaner energy future.
