STEM Challenge - Hatchet Help Signal with LEGO SPIKE
by Lisa Boyer
In this integrated STEM and literacy lesson, 4th grade students will explore survival challenges faced by the main character in Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. After analyzing the story and discussing Brian’s situation, students will use the LEGO SPIKE Essential kit to design, build, and code a device that could signal for help in the wilderness. Through hands-on engineering, coding, and teamwork, students will apply the design process to solve a real-world problem inspired by literature, while developing 21st-century problem-solving and collaboration skills.
