Rain Models and Water-Control Systems
In this lesson, students work in groups to simulate a rainstorm and explore ways to manipulate rainwater. Materials include a plastic or aluminum bin, paper, spray bottles, markers, and an array of engineering materials such as modeling clay, Play-Doh, foil, etc. Students will build their mountain model, simulate a rainstorm, observe potential problems with where water settles, and then design and implement solutions (dams, canals, etc.) to divert water elsewhere.
