Perimeter and Area of Squares and Rectangles - Computational Modeling
by Jim Leinbach
The first part of this lesson reviews the area and perimeter of squares and rectangles using graph paper. Algebraic representations are introduced and students define variables and write equations. The second part introduced coding of the perimeter of a square using the Pyret programming language (computation modeling). Students are now prepared to independently program the area of a square, the area of a rectangle, and the perimeter of a rectangle. This lesson has been utilized successfully within an upper elementary (gr 4-6) Montessori classroom.
