The Navajo Code Talker Mockup Radio Transmitter Project is an ELA/STEM hands-on lesson designed for 11th-grade students. This project-based lesson that involves students working in small groups to research, design, and build a mockup of a radio transmitter similar to those used by the Navajo Code Talkers. Using only basic school supplies like cardboard, paper clips, and colored markers, students will construct a mockup transmitter as they integrate their understanding of the historical events based on the book "Code Talker" by Joseph Bruchac and the basics of geometry's two- and three-dimensional shapes and objects and engineering's design and decision-making process. It will culminate in a presentation where students showcase their models, explaining the design process, functionality, and historical relevance of their work.
