Engineering for Impact: Using Acoustic Physics and Sensors to Solve Biomedical Problems
by Jasmine Coleman
Students discover how the physics of waves and sound connect to real-world biomedical challenges. Through hands-on simulations, spectrogram analysis, and a design challenge, they explore how engineers use sensors to monitor life-saving devices. More than content, the lesson centers student agency: inviting learners to design their own “Smart Safety Device” and recognize that their creativity and voice can shape meaningful solutions in health, safety, and beyond.
This lesson is more than physics; it is a call to see STEM as a tool for justice, care, and impact. Students leave not only knowing how to analyze a waveform but also with the deeper understanding that their ideas matter. They walk away knowing that science belongs to them, that engineering is a language they can speak, and that their future innovations could change lives.
