Plant Cell Cookies

Summary:
This lesson is going to be designed to teach third graders about the plant cells and anatomy.

The lesson is based on an overview of the plant cells and an interactive experience for students to explore and engage with the content.

Materials:
Science Notebook
Pencils
Plant cell cookie supplies
Paper plates, Plastic spoons, Paper towels or napkins, Sugar cookies or other plain cookies (rectangular-plant cell) enough for each child to have one, Vanilla frosting (cytoplasm), String licorice candies (cell membrane), Maple Nut Goodies (a Brach candy) or some other candy that is about 3/4 of an inch long (nucleus), Good and Plenty or Mike and Ike candies (some will be mitochondria and others will be animal cell vacuoles), Green M&M's, Tic-Tacs, or other small green candies (chloroplasts), circus candies or some other rather large candy (plant vacuoles)

Agenda:
5 minutes:
Begin lesson with a graffiti wall using chart paper- what do students know and understand about plants and their cells.
5 minutes:
Allow students time to discuss as a class that plants are similar to people and animals and that they have cells that are used to help them live.
15 minutes:
Read and discuss the parts of the plant cell from the article. Take bullet notes/draw notes on purposes/functions of the plant cell link- here

Give Vocabulary/Make Together- See definitions in this slides notes if needed

10 minutes:
Allow students to sketch or label template for the plant cell on the next 2 slides.
3 minutes:
Watch plant cell video linked- here
4 minutes:
Turn and talk to discuss what you noticed/wondered about the events in the video we watched.
5 minutes:
Build a class Anchor Chart/Knowledge Wall with chart paper.
40 minutes:
Allow students to plant cell cookie supplies to build their own plant cells, write about cells, and complete vocabulary quick check. Student Assessment Packet link here
