Composting: The Science of Recycling

In this lesson students will understand the science behind recycling and composting, and be able to explain the importance of these processes for environmental sustainability. First part of the lesson is engaging students with brief discussion about waste and its impact on the environment. Next is the recycling topic which involves presenting slideshow about recycling, definition of recycling, importance of recycling, different types of recyclable materials, such as paper, glass, plastic and aluminum. The lesson includes also demonstration of sorting recyclable materials into recycling bin. Third part of the lesson is composting. Use slideshow about composting, definition of composting, importance of composting, reducing food waste, improving soil quality, and reducing greenhouse emissions. Also a discussion on what can and cannot be composted, explanation on the process of composting. Hands on actitivity will follow. Recap the main points covered in the lesson.
