We will take a break for lunch.
The ability to understand and perform operations with rational numbers is critically important not only to function in everyday life, but to master concepts in areas from science to economics. Yet it can be challenging to go beyond basic math facts and memory exercises when teaching rational number operations. Developing true mathematical fluency requires something more than the teaching of "standard" algorithms for number operations.
This session will focus on creating and using mathematical models designed to foster student fluency when performing operations with rational numbers. We will share classroom activities that use anchoring models and games to support fluency with rational number operations, specifically the multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
